The History of the Jones Funeral Home
Jones Funeral Home Through the Years
The original funeral home was owned and managed by Harold McClure, who operated his funeral home on Georgetown’s main street. It was not unusual at that time for a funeral to be in a family’s residence, where the casket would be set up in the living room for visitation and funeral service.
Harold eventually purchased and renovated a larger home at 34 Edith Street as a dedicated site to host funeral services. Jim Jones started working for Harold in 1954 as a funeral director.
In 1955, they changed the business name to McClure-Jones Funeral Home, launching the next generation of this Georgetown institution. In 1973, Jim’s son Phil became a funeral director and started working at McClure-Jones.
In 1974 Jim Jones and his wife Noreen took over the funeral home following the passing of Harold McCure. In the mid-seventies the Georgetown community was experiencing significant growth and the Jones’ knew an expansion was needed.
In 1979, a 2.8-acre lot was severed from the original John Brown Devereaux farm and the Jones family proceeded with plans to build a brand-new funeral home building.
1983 was the formation of a new name for the funeral home, J.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, and three years later, they relocated to their new location on Trafalgar Road. The new building was considerably larger with 8,000 square feet of accessible space and more parking to accommodate their growing business.
1989 was the year that Phil Jones and his wife Marg took over the business from his parents. Robert Blackburn came on board and a year later Toby Chisholm joined the team. Rob & Toby would become integral to the day-to-day running of the business and in seeing the business’ growth into the millennium.
In 1995 construction was completed on a 2,000 square foot addition housing a new family Center; The Trafalgar Room. With this expansion, J.S.Jones & Son Funeral Home could accommodate funeral receptions ensuring Georgetown and area families greater convenience and more tailored services in their time of need.
In 2018, Robert Blackburn and Toby Chisholm took over the ownership from Phil and Marg. A year later the funeral home’s name was changed to Jones Funeral Home. The funeral home continues to serve the community today as an independently owned and operated establishment.
